My Top Ten Health Discoveries of 2014

2014 like any other year had it’s share of health fads. Turn on your tv, phone or radio and there’s a company touting the new “secret to good health” from detoxes, green smoothies to green coffee supplements. It can be difficult to keep up not to mention these trends can cost you time and money with little or no evidence to show for your investment.

These are the significant health discoveries in 2014 that I observed.

10. We learnt how to detox in a healthy way. Avoid all added sugars, avoid “diet” products, and eat clean. I did a number of group detoxes last year and even kept some things after the detox was over like eating a salad with lemon juice.

9. Organic food is not necessarily healthy food. Organic junk food is out there. Organic foods can be loaded with sugar and processed items and still be labeled as organic.

8. Green coffee supplements are probably not going to help you lose any weight. Sorry Dr. Oz! However, none of the weight loss claims can be proven since there hasn’t been enough research yet.

7. Lower your stress levels. Stress kills diets. Use stress reduction techniques like yoga and meditation to slim down.

6. Apples are the dirtiest (highest pesticide level) food of the year. If you are deciding on what organic items to purchase, apples would be a good one to put on your list.

5. Eat at home for the best weight loss. This is simple, but the key for success. I tell my clients this all the time, when you cook it you have complete control of what you are eating.

4. You can use healthy swaps in recipes to save mega calories. Don’t be afraid to try new healthy recipe tricks! I added walnuts and raisins to my oatmeal this morning for a yummy breakfast with a hint of a savory and sweet flavor.

3. Whole grain and multigrain do not mean the same thing. Read labels carefully. What are the first ingredients listed. Check for the amount of sugar (not more than 6g) and the amount of carbohydrates.

2. You need your Zzzz’s. Sleep affects weight loss.  Don’t slack on sleep if you want to lose weight.

1. Manage your mind. Manage your health. Your mind is your most powerful ally when you are trying to live a healthy lifestyle.
