3 Steps to Lose Weight Permanently Over 40 (Part 2)

As a Certified Weight Loss Coach for smart and successful women over the age of 40, I am more interested in how you think than what you eat.

The second step is categorizing your Food. Categorizing your eating helps to evaluate and understand when you are eating for reasons other than to provide your body nourishment.

You might have noticed that there are times when you eat to fuel your body and other times it is because you want to eat for the purpose of enjoyment. By categorizing your eating you can manage how, what, when and how much you eat in order to lose weight permanently.

  • Fuel eating – This is when we eat to provide nutrition to our bodies. Fuel foods are nutrient dense and include foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Fuel eating should occur 90% of the time. I compare fuel foods to hardworking efficient employees. They get the work done in an efficient manner.
  • Joy Eating – This is when you eat food simply because it tastes good to you. With joy eating  you must enjoy it. Joy foods provide no nutritional value. I compare them to contract employees. They are there to serve a short-term purpose and are not there for the long haul.

Eating for joy 10% of the time is a healthy balance.

  • Fog Eating is when you eat and are not conscious of it. It could be eating a bag of chips while watching your favorite program or sporting event on television and not realizing how much until the bag is empty. You finish eating the bag of chips, cookies, etc and are still hungry and unfortunately it has not provided any nourishment. Most of us spend a lot of time here. Sometimes we have no idea that we are even doing it. I liken fog eating to lazy employees. They collect a pay check but provide no benefit to the organization.
  • Storm Eating – This is eating when you are not hungry, however you realize it but feel that you can’t stop it. This is similar to binge eating. Most times you eat this way to escape from a feeling that is uncomfortable or painful.

It is called storm eating because it does come to an end as all storms do. When it is happening you feel out of control.  Storm eating can be caused by deprivation, hence the importance of joy foods. It is easy to be hard on yourself when you are storm eating, however doing the opposite and being kind is what your body needs. Use it as way to learn more about yourself.

When you are able to categorize your food, you will begin to stop the cycle of using food to solve the feeling you get with a negative emotion.

Homework: Do an interview this week with any food that goes into your mouth. Are they quality employees, lazy employees, absent-minded employees or temporary employees? Always remember whatever you eat will fall into one of these four categories. This will help you to become more aware and becoming more aware will put you on the path to permanent weight loss.
