Be Intentional About Your Health

During a phone conversation with my mom I had asked about one of my favorite uncles who is 77. To which she replied “He is not doing too well and it is really hard for him to walk or get around”. She also mentioned that my Uncle told her she is so fortunate to be able to walk 2 miles every day with ease.

My mom responded to my uncle with the statement, “My princess (that is what she calls me) is responsible for this, she has taught me all I know about being healthy “.  The statement brought tears to my eyes at the time and to be honest tears are welling up as I write this. Thank you mum you gave me the strength and courage to do what I do everyday.

My mom is 77 years old and she walks around and takes care of herself. She will tell you she is a lot slower but she gets around.

We all need to be intentional about our health so that we can live long, healthy lives.

The most commonly uttered excuse when it comes to exercise is, “I just don’t have time.” I always encourage my clients to find a cornerstone movement that they enjoy and do it for at least 5 minutes. A cornerstone movement in my program is any kind of exercise that allows you to move in some way and you actually enjoy and you make a commitment to doing it regularly. It could vary from a 5 minute walk 3 times a week to a 1 hour workout 5 days a week. This is the minimum amount of exercise you will do no matter what is going in your life. A cornerstone movement is a priority in your life. It could be walking, running, swimming, Zumba or dancing, rope jumps or a group exercise at the gym.

Sometimes I have clients that dislike exercise. I suggest that they explore the possibility of thinking of exercise as a gift to your body and not as a punishment or something you do to get a specific outcome or result. You are giving to your body the gift of movement, health, strength, and time.

Do you have a cornerstone movement that you do regularly? If not, commit to trying, I challenge you to five-minute opportunities for exercise in every day. I know you can find 5 minutes.
