Foods and Vegetables You Should Always Buy Organic

If you’re like me, you probably try to save money on groceries when you can. I read the local supermarket sales flyers to find the best deals on everything I need to create healthy meals each week. I look for sales items my family consumes regularly. I buy pantry staples—like quinoa and steel cut oats—in bulk. However, there’s one area I never skimp on and that’s produce.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not taking any chances with my family’s health. I follow the recommendations of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and always purchase organic varieties of the following fruits and veggies.

1. Apples
2. Strawberries
3. Grapes
4. Celery
5. Peaches
6. Spinach
7. Sweet Bell Peppers
8. Imported Nectarines
9. Cucumbers
10. Cherry Tomatoes
11. Imported Snap Peas
12. Potatoes
13. Kale/Collard Greens
14. Summer Squash

According to the EWG, non-organic varieties of these fruits and vegetables generally have the highest levels of pesticide contamination. Infants and children are particularly sensitive to the health risks of pesticide consumption because their internal organs are still growing and developing. However, pesticides are dangerous no matter your age; studies have linked them to brain and nervous system toxicity, hormone disruption, cancer and skin/eye/lung irritation.

In addition to buying organic varieties of fresh and frozen fruits and veggies on the list above, you may want to go organic for products that contain them. For example, the EWC found more than 40 different pesticides on non-organic apples. They also found pesticide residue in non-organic apple juice and applesauce.

On the other hand, the EWG has stated that the following fruits and vegetables have the lowest levels of pesticide residue. If you don’t want to buy organic produce across the board, these should be perfectly safe for consumption regardless of where they were grown.

1. Avocados
2. Sweet Corn
3. Pineapples
4. Cabbage
5. Frozen Sweet Peas
6. Onions
7. Asparagus
8. Mangoes
9. Papayas
10. Kiwi
11. Eggplant
12. Grapefruit
13. Cantaloupe
14. Cauliflower
15. Sweet Potatoes

Depending on the country you live in organic might be the norm and if so that is great. For those of us that live in countries where organic is hard to come by and more expensive this will help you to make an informed decision on what is best for your family. With fruits and vegetables on both lists you can decide on what you will spend money on from the organic list and mix it up with the produce found on the list of the lowest levels of pesticide residue.
