Gluten-Free Lifestyle: Is It Essential or Just A Fad?

is the general term used for proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). These proteins hold the foods together and maintain their shape. Gluten is safe for the general population but can cause severe allergic reactions in people with gluten-related disorders especially those diagnosed with celiac disease – a severe gluten intolerance.

On a gluten-free diet, these grains and any foods or ingredients derived from them must be eliminated. Think of cereals, bread, pasta, processed meats, cakes, cookies, pies, soups, etc.

For celiacs, a gluten-free diet means avoiding all foods that contain the proteins. However, a gluten-free diet is also pushed and even promoted by some popular celebrities as a means to lose weight (or prevent weight gain) or as a “healthier” diet option for the general public. It has become a trend. But is this a trend you should try or skip? Does gluten-free diet really benefit your health even if you are non-celiac? Watch the video and find out.
