Three Fitness Mistakes Beginners Often Make

While adjusting your diet is a wonderful way to drop extra pounds, you’ll achieve even greater success when you combine proper nutrition with calorie-burning exercise. Of course, you should try to avoid these three common beginner fitness mistakes that can derail your progress.

1. Trying to do too much too soon

Also known as overtraining, this common fitness mistake is the source of much discomfort and injury. At best, it can leave you too tired or sore to keep up with your workouts. At worst, it can leave you injured, chronically stress your body, and even weaken your immune system.

Avoid overtraining by starting your exercise program slowly. Listen to your body and give it time to recover between workouts. While it’s natural to experience some muscle soreness in the beginning, it should not be so severe that it prevents you from performing your daily activities.

2. Refusing to ask for help

Many beginner exercisers see their lack of experience as a source of embarrassment, and it makes them reluctant to ask for assistance at the gym or in class. This is unfortunate, as performing an activity wrong can make it less effective and even lead to injury.

As a beginner, you should remember that everyone was once in your position and will not criticize you for requiring a little help to get the most out of your workout. If you’re taking a class for the first time or want to try out a new lift, don’t be afraid to ask the instructor or a trainer for insight.

3. Putting off working out

Don’t put off until tomorrow (or later in the day) what you can do right now. If you do, you’re likely to find—like many other beginner exercisers—that you never actually get it done. The best time to begin your workout program is right this minute—not when you’re less busy at work, have lost five pounds, or the kids are out of school for the holidays.

If you want to have success with any exercise program, you need to commit to it. Treat your workouts like any other type of appointment and put them on your calendar. Then do whatever it takes to make sure you complete them.
